Phil Ivey has a reputation for being one of the best bluffers in the world of poker, and incredible hands like this one are the reason why. Ivey manages to turn a pocket 5-2 offsuit into a huge pot, all by correctly reading the situation at the table.
In this clip from an episode of High Stakes Poker, pro Barry Greenstein raised $5.5k preflop with Queen-10 offsuit – but Ivey, sensing Greenstein didn’t have strong cards, raised to $18k with absolutely nothing.
Lex Veldhuis actually had the best pocket cards at the table with King-Jack of hearts, and after some deliberation raised to $51.6k.
Greenstein escaped with a small loss, but Ivey fearlessly asked Veldhuis how much he had left in his stack, then went all-in. If Veldhuis pushed, he likely would have taken down a huge pot – but he folded his cards.
